Australia was first colonized by Britain as a prison colony. Before white settlers arrived, Australia was populated by natives known as Aborigines, who had come from southeast Asia 40,000 years prior to European discovery of the land. British colonization was overall harmful towards Australia and its native people because the aggressive presence of the Europeans was destructive towards Aboriginal culture.
